However, being so close to the British lines on Shell Hill — some of the 2nd Division’s picquets had already been taken prisoner — the Russians opened fire shortly after six o’clock and there was a brisk exchange of shots. Caught unawares, even though the Russian plan for an assault was common knowledge, Pennefather ordered reinforcements into the forward defensive positions and the battle settled down to become the confusion of dense mist, shouting and ferocious hand-to-hand fighting which participants on both sides were to remember with awe in the years to come.
